  • The Ai in this game seems to be set up to screw the player over as much as possible.

See here. A prime example of the Ai not just being stupid but actively engaging in sabotage. The corridor on top is free. In fact most of these units stood right next to that wall when it came down. They took a few potshots at the artillery. Then decided to backtrack and go right through the front entrance. The one with all the barbed fire and stuff set up at the end. This isn't just the Ai picking a way at random, it's the Ai actively refuting a way, going back and taking the worst and slowest way possible.

Isn't a question of AI but pathfinding and fire range of your units. Artillery blocks passage like a wall and the units walk on the only available way. If you destroy artillery your units will choose the new best path.

The units were shooting at the artillery, stopped shooting and then went back. Also using things like artillery and other buildings as "walls" and having units ignore them the same way is frankly speaking ridiculous and very much a question of AI and pathfinding.

Structures blocking paths is an issue that was introduced when the developers fixed some other pathfinding issues that people were finding even more annoying (going in circles or not back & forth). The reason many of us complain about the new weakness less is because it is more manageable to get around it.
        • Use Focus Fire to hit beyond the wall
        • Use Rally to get your troops closer to the structure blocking path troops will shoot only if you get them close enough
        • Drop Paratroopers near enough
        • Spawn lot of troops which makes the troops move in more widespread formation and helps get the obstructing structure in their view
        • Use Aerial attacks to take out the blocking structure
        • Use longer range troops that will get interested in destroying structure lower range Grunts etc are ignoring while taking different path

Units will ignore a blocking structure going forward (if not in range)...but when they enter the heart of the base and start getting attacked...the first thing they wanna do is backtrack around the corner to take out that structure instead of attacking the guys that are killing them. It's like "Oh, those 20 Rangers are firing at me? I'll just ignore them and take out that Anti-Air around the corner first"

Each unit type has their own behavior peculiarities. You will notice your short range units like Riot in particular do what you describe but not your longer range units (like Snipers) that will keep their forward facing attack as higher priority.

The issue is the short range dumb units like Riots can't yet see the targets ahead, but they are aware of all things they have crossed at longer range or they are coded to want to destroy things in order going towards the HQ.

For the people claiming "this is totaly just because it's blocked by a building they should see as viable target!" Nope. In both these screenshots they have clear and quick ways through the enemy defenses. In both these pictures the majority of them decides to run over barbed wire anyway.

The Ai doesn't seem to acknowledge barbed wire as an obstacle at all. Which means it will run straight over it and into the enemy defenses even while there is a vastly better way which is way faster right next to them.

In those screenshots, the next closest target is the Sniper Tower on the bottom, so they will take the shortest path (through the barb wire). If you destroy that Sniper Tower, they will start taking the north path.

I really hate when they do that! This happens to me all the time. But what's worse is when you use the rally flag, put them right where you want them, and once the flag is gone, they all turn around and go back the other way! That really pisses me off! LMBO
